Staff members at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) have concluded the MVP Boost project can be built and operated with no significant impact to the environment or public health, according to a recently issued Environmental Assessment of the project’s plans.
The assessment marks a critical milestone in the regulatory review of the project, which was proposed in 2025 in response to market demand for additional capacity on the Mountain Valley Pipeline Mainline. MVP Boost would leverage the existing MVP Mainline footprint by adding compression at three existing compressor stations in Wetzel, Braxton and Fayette counties in West Virginia, and building a new compressor station on land owned by Mountain Valley in Montgomery County, Virginia.
The MVP Boost project will not increase the maximum allowable operating pressure of the MVP Mainline, which entered operation in 2024 and has been recognized as critical energy infrastructure.
FERC staff noted the new compressor station proposed in Virginia would be on the site of a former surface shale and clay mine that closed in 2015. They also concluded construction and operation at that site would have no impact on the Spring Hollow Reservoir or other public drinking water supplies.
Project-related emissions would be well within federal limits established to ensure the protection of public health, and the MVP Boost project would have no significant noise, vibration or air quality impacts, according to the environmental assessment.
Construction of MVP Boost is targeted to start following receipt of all necessary authorizations and permits, with an in-service date targeted for mid-2028.
